Sunday Sounds - forever one of my favorite bands

Fashion Friday - Arrow & Aspen

Two very creative and talented California moms put their heads together to create this new clothing line. Their whimsical designs are hand-drawn and made in the USA.

In addition to clothing, they also offer prints and accessories. The slouch beanie Jude is wearing is our new favorite hat - and fits sizes 4 months to 5T. It is nice and lightweight for our mild, California days and for $12, it’s a steal.

Happy Friday and have a great weekend!

Music doesn’t lie. If there is something to be changed in this world, then it can only happen through music.

What people have to realize first is they’re not just one single person who does weird, out-of-character things now and then. We’re all made up of many different selves who fight and compete with one another constantly. Somehow we’ve got to get them to agree on a few basic things. Get them to stop fighting with one another. They all have different needs. One part of us wants safety, but another wants adventure. I want to be loved. I want to be left alone…Those aren’t contradictions-they’re independent selves saying ‘I want this!’

Sunday Sounds - Useless Trivia Edition

On Friday I found out this song is about my friend’s fish. It couldn’t swim because of a rare disease, which is pretty depressing. I never realized the lyrics were so literal.

On that note, hope everyone had a great weekend!!

Let me just start by saying that last night was one of the best nights we have ever had as a family. This came after one of my most challenging days as a mother, which involved constantly butting heads and engaging in a battle of wills with a very whiny three year old. I was concerned about our plans to go see Pinback play at the racetrack for the Summer Concert Series and almost cancelled the whole thing. SO glad I didn’t.

Let me back up for a second. We have been fortunate enough to meet some amazing people since we moved here. About a year and a half ago when I was at our favorite coffee joint with Jude, I was approached by a woman with a boy about his age. She said her son had a lot of friends that were girls, but they didn’t know any boys in the neighborhood, so she was wondering if we wanted to hang out. Of course I did! I was dying for a mom friend. Anyway, I quickly discovered she was married to the bass player for Pinback, which has been one of my favorite bands since the early 2000s. Fast forward to last night and we were backstage with Jude watching them perform. I’m so thankful we had the opportunity to do so, and I’m also incredibly thankful for a friend that has helped me keep my sanity several times over. Jude really lucked out too, because those little boys are best buddies.

Anyway, Mark and I were so proud of our little guy. He was all smiles, all night. We got there in time to see two of the horse races, which was a surprise, and then made our way backstage for an awesome performance. Jude sat on Mark’s lap the whole time, clapping and bobbing away to the beat. He was exhausted, but behaved like the most amazing kid on the planet! Now he wants to be a drummer (yes!).

Other milestones besides the first horse race and concert - he used a port-a-potty for the first time. As soon as he went in there he said, “wash my hands, wash my hands.” That’s my kid!

Oh, and just in case you don’t believe I was there, here is a totally horrible picture of Jude and me. What a creeper!

Jackson Pollock style thank you cards, if you can stand the mess-

Have I mentioned I am a procrastinator? I felt like a homemade card would soften the blow of sending the thank you cards for Jude’s birthday so late. Last week we went to our local art store and found these blank “paper bag” cards I thought would be perfect for splatter fest. He’s still super serious about his “artwort”, and found this new, messy technique to be very interesting.

Scenes from the last week -

Our internet has been out and I hate posting from my phone, so please excuse the barrage of photos.

a. Jude received his first Kiwi Crate yesterday (post to come) and it is a huge success. b. I also finally got the last of the baby stuff out of his room and moved a few things around, so his “cozy, cozy” big boy space is almost completed. He is loving the changes. c. I tried my hand at Shibori dying and am in love. It’s the perfect way to fix a stained white tee. d. The highlight of last week was visiting the butterfly garden at Balboa Park. The ficus trees are amazing!! e. He insisted on lunching in his new concert “earmuffs” today. Good thing he likes them, because we are taking him to his first show tomorrow evening! f. His obsession with animals has reached a new level, and we are now pretending we live in the habitats of his favorite creatures. Yesterday it was the Arctic, hence the winter attire in the middle of summer. g. I am so incredibly homesick for the PNW. I think we are planning a trip up next month and I need it, big time. This constant sunshine is starting to bum me out.
